About New Contingent

An independent editorial project publishing summaries of research on earnings and working hours that move over time.

What this is

New Contingent publishes plain-language summaries of academic and institutional research on variable earnings, short-notice scheduling and the household economics studied alongside them. It is a small editorial operation. It is not a research institute, it conducts no studies of its own, and it does not employ or represent the researchers whose work it describes.

The project is published under the name New Contingent and is responsible for its own editorial content. All correspondence is handled at support@newcontingent.online.

How subjects are chosen

A subject is taken up when there is a body of published work substantial enough to describe honestly, including work that disagrees with itself. Subjects with a single study behind them are not covered, because a summary of one study tends to read as more settled than the evidence warrants. Preference goes to areas where researchers have published critiques of their own methods, since those critiques are part of what makes a summary useful.

How sources are handled

Researchers are named in the body of the text rather than in a reference list, so that attribution is visible at the point a finding is described. Figures are used only where a real published source carries them. Where evidence is disputed, the dispute is described in the same passage as the finding. Where a study's sample or design limits what it can show, that limit is stated rather than omitted.

What this project does not do

  • It does not give professional, financial, legal, employment or medical advice.
  • It does not offer consultations, coaching, assessments or personalised guidance.
  • It does not publish testimonials, reviews, success stories or before-and-after accounts, and does not solicit them.
  • It does not claim that reading its material produces any result.
  • It does not present its material as a method, system, formula or sequence of steps.

How New Contingent advertises

New Contingent promotes its editorial material through paid advertising on online platforms. Advertising is written to the same standard as the site itself. An advertisement for this project describes what an article covers. It does not presume anything about the circumstances, employment arrangement, income, relationships or health of the person who sees it, and it is not written to suggest that anything about that person is known.

Advertising for this project carries no testimonials, no claims of results and no urgency or scarcity devices. Where an advertisement refers to an article, the destination reached from that advertisement is that article or a page describing it, so that the advertisement and the page correspond. Advertisements are not targeted on the basis of any inference about a person's circumstances.

Corrections

Errors of fact are corrected at the point where they appeared, and the correction is recorded on the corrections page rather than made silently. Corrections may be reported by email at any time.

Commercial disclosure

New Contingent may sell access to editorial material it produces. Where material is paid for, that is stated plainly at the point of purchase, and the refund conditions are published in full on the refund page. The project does not accept payment for editorial coverage, does not publish sponsored articles, and does not allow any commercial relationship to determine which research is described or how it is characterised.
